EasyStar GoPro Hero3 White Edition volando en Austria

Multiplex EasyStar with GoPro Hero3 White Edition flying in Upper Austria

First flight with the GoPro Hero3 White Edtion mounted in my EasyStar from Multiplex, fliying over a field in Hohenzell, close to Ried im Innkreis, in the region of Upper Austria (naturally, in Austria)...

My skills as pilot have improved a little bit thanks to the PC simulator, but I still need more flights... however, I'm already missing the ailerons for a more controlled flight... I guess that they will be the next upgrade of the EasyStar...

By the way, in the video you can see my first partially-controlled loopings...

Primer vuelo "controlado" del EasyStar

EasyStar first "controlled" flight

I was very lucky this last Sunday trying to fly this little spawn called EasyStar. It was the fourth time that I was in the country trying to make a controlled flight without success. The first time the problem were the batteries, then the original motor (powerless), then the unbalance and/or a bad trimming, etc...

The first flight of this Sunday almost end in a catastrophe. Not only that I almost crashed it into a high tension electrified lines (which were like 200 meters from were I was), but also that after trying to reduce altitude, I lost it behind some trees. You wouldn't believe how it did to survive seeing where it flew through. Imagine a 10x10 m window, with a house on one side, trees on the other and the high-tension lines on top... yes, just there... totally uncommanded as I was not touching the radio... Moreover, it crossed the street to land (it was untouched) in a small green garden on the other side, with another house 4 meters on its left and a garage with cars. All alone, uncontrolled. I was expecting the worst, broken windows, crashing to a solar panel in a roof... but not, it was there, just landed in the garden... It's a shame that I have no picture of the situation...

Hopeless and still nervous, we moved to a different field on top of a hill, more spacious but a little bit windy... and finally, being the 5th attempt, the spawn flew... and it flew nice and for several minutes... see the videos below.

The clues for the success were some hours spent in a cheap simulator bought in ebay, and in a second place, the correction in the yaw that I've detected in the quasi-catastrophic flight, by trimming a little bit the rudder. If you are beginners, you must definitely do some practice with a simulator, is mandatory...

Modificaciones al EasyStar de Multiplex - Parte II

Multiplex EasyStar upgrade - Part II

There were no way to make the EasyStar flight with the original motor, and I'm not sure if the problem were the motor, the propeller or the batteries (probably this). So this morning I decided to make the motor upgrade and install a brushless and a Lithium-Polimer battery (LiPo).

Los componentes que utilicé fueron:
The components used are:

- RC-Timer Brushless motor, model 2805-14 of 2840 KV
- Regulador ESC de 30A de la marca EZ
- EZ ESC 30A voltage regulator
- Pack de batería LiPo de 2 celdas (2S = 7,4V), 2200mAh y 25C de capacidad de descarga, de la marca ZOP Power.
- ZOP Power LiPo pack, 2 cells (2S = 7,4Volts), 2200mAh and 25C of discharge capacity.
- 8" propeller, cutted on the tips to save 5 mm per blade.
- Adaptador de hélice para eje de 3 mm.
- Propeller adaptor for 3mm shaft.

All the components (with the exception of the plywood, the fasteners and the propeller) have been purchased in ebay with the following approximate cost:

Motor = 6,15 €
ESC = 6,65 €
LiPo = 10,83 €
Prop Adapter = 1,19 €

The propeller came from another RC airplane and the wood I bought it in the BauMax for 5€ per four A4 sized sheets.

The modification consist of removing the original motor and the installation of the brushless one, but this is outrunner (the exterior casing turns with the shaft), so it can't be installed in the same internal location of the original motor.

Therefore, once the original motor is removed, we must cut some of the material of the original support to give a flat surface for installing the new engine fixation (plywood). It's very important to do this procedure taking care of the angle in which the plywood will end, as it should be perpendicular to the original shaft in order to not change the direction of the thrust (thrust vector) of the propeller.

Finally, we should fix the base of the engine to the plywood support using the wood fasteners, and we'll locate the ESC either in the cabine compartment or in top of the fuselage. I put it initially in top of the fuselage, but the battery is muy lighter than the old NiMH that I was using, so the airplane was unbalanced. I'll need to move the ESC to the compartment, as much forward as possible to compensate the unbalance.

The new power plant has much more power than the old one, and now the airplane wins altittude almost like an acrobatic (it's too much I think), so I will try to limitate the accelerator with the trim for future flights in order to avoid a non-desired climb (mainly because of my very-beginner level of pilotage that won't allow me to recover the situation).

Modificaciones al EasyStar de Multiplex - Parte I

Multiplex EasyStar upgrade - Part I

I've got an EasyStar from the german Multiplex that I've bougth as a kit (only airplane and motor) as I already have the radio from another crashed aircraft.

The first change that I did was to extend the rudder, because even without flight the plane one can realize that the control surface is not big enough to produce "funny" turns. It's clear that this airplane was not designed as an acrobatic, but I don't want it to be boring...

The extension is a piece of compact carton stuck to the rudder with UHU, and reinforced with some cocktail-tooth sticks.

I promise to comment the feelings after the flight with these mod.in a review of the post..
