Mi homenaje a la revista Lúpin

My tribute to Lúpin magazine

Si sos de Argentina (y si, lo escribo en "argentino", mis disculpas a los lectores del resto de hispanoamérica) y tenés mas de, digamos, 20 años, seguramente que habrás visto, leído y disfrutado de la revista mas educativa, cautivante y exitante jamás creada para los chicos. la revista Lúpin. Este es mi pequeño homenaje a la revista que me acompañó durante mi infancia y me cambió la vida. Hoy soy ingeniero aeronáutico gracias en parte a esta revista.

If you are from Argentina and you have more than, let's say, 20 years old, you've probably seen/red/enjoyed the most educative, gripping and exciting montlhy magazine create for kids: the Lúpin magazine. This is my little tribut to this fantastic magazine that was my partner during my childhood and literally changed my life: I am an aeronautical engineer thanks, in part, to this magazine.




Es imposible describir cuántas horas de cultivo mental y aventuras varias han gastado los pibes de Argentina mientras leían Lúpin, generación tras generación.
It's impossible to describe how many hours of mental cultivation and adventures have the kids from Argentina spent while reading Lúpin, generation after generation. 

Según Wikipedia,  "la revista contaba las aventuras aéreas de su héroe piloto Lúpin, junto con otras tiras de salida regular con otros personajes (entre los que cito a Saltapones, mi preferido, o Resorte "El ayudante del profe", o Bicho y Gordi) que normalmente tenían alguna tendencia técnica o científica, pero también de aventura pura. Asimismo incluía planos para realizar aeromodelos o barriletes (cometas), pequeños dispositivos electrónicos, telescopios, y otros artilugios. Aunque nunca fue de llegada masiva (nota mia: seguramente porque a no todos los pibes les interesaban las aventuras "ténicas" de sus personajes), la revista siempre recibía cartas de ingenieros argentinos repartidos por el mundo que rememoraban su infancia junto a la revista, como también de pilotos e incluso de un astronauta de la NASA (Frank Caldeiro) que la había leído de pequeño". Pero todo esto no alcanza para explicar lo que esta revista realmente representaba para aquellos pibes que teníamos un poco de curiosidad por lo técnico y la ciencia. Los personajes mezclaban la pasión por la aeronáutica, la electrónica, los inventos, con mucha bravura, humildad, deseo de libertad e incluso hasta en algunos casos resultaban amantes de la ecología, cuando esa palabra todavía ni se había acuñado.
Quoting Wikipedia: "the magazine featured the air adventures of its pilot hero Lúpin, as well as other strips with regular characters, usually with a technical or scientific bent. It also included plans for building model aircrafts, simple electronic devices, telescopes, and other gizmos. Although never a huge popular success, it received letters from Argentinian engineers, pilots, and even a NASA astronaut who read it as children (Frank Caldeiro)". But all this text is really not enough to express what this magazine represented to the kids with some curiosity in the technics or cience... The characters mixed the passion for the aeronautics and the electronics, with loads of braveness, hope of freedom and some times even ecology, when this word was almost not even invented.

La "revistucha" (como le llamábamos) fue lanzada en 1966 y en Abril de 2007 salió el número 499, que pasaría a ser el último dada la muerte de uno de sus dos creadores originales, Héctor Sidoli.
The magazine was launched in 1966 and the last number was the 499 in April 2007, when one of the original creators, Héctor Sidoli passed away.

Luego de la muerte de Sidoli, el otro fundador, Guillermo Guerrero, trató de continuar con la tirada, pero por discusiones legales con la viuda de Sidoli sobre los derechos de sus personajes, Guerrero se vio forzado a lanzar su propia revista ya sin los personajes de Sidoli. La revista se llamó Pinlu (Lúpin al revés) y solo se imprimió durante dos años, ya que en 2009 Guerrero también falleció.
After Sidoli's death, the other head of the magazine, Guillermo Guerrero, tried to continue writing but due to copyright discussions with Sidoli's widow, Guerrero was forced to start a new version of the magazine including only his characters. The magazine was called Pinlu (inverse from Lupin) and it was sold until 2009, when Guerrero also passed away.

Cientos de ingenieros o científicos argentinos han descubierto (o potenciado) sus capacidades técnico/científicas durante su niñez gracais a esta revista, incluyendome a mi mismo. Yo era un fanático de esta revista, las collecionaba y me recorría cuanta tienda de libros usados había para conseguir números viejos... e incluso me ponía pesado para que mi vieja me llevara hasta el microcentro porteño a las oficinas de la revista para comprar números viejos o los suplementos técnicos y anuales. Si mal no recuerdo, tenía 7 años cuando llegó a mis manos mi primer Lúpin y la misma me acompaó durante toda mi niñez-adolescencia... Tenía solo 10 años cuando ya estaba haciendo mis circuitos electrónicos!!!
Hundreds of argentinean engineers and cientists have discovered (or just powered) their technical or cientistic likes during their childhood thanks to this magazine, including myself. I was a huge fan, collecting several numbers, searching for old magazines in the used-books stores, asking my mother to take me to Lupin's offices in downtown Buenos Aires for buying old editions, annual and techincal supplements... as far as I remember, I was probably 7 years old when I got my first Lúpin and it joined me during all my youth... I was already doing electronic devices with 10 years old thanks to this magazine!!!

Ahora solo me queda recordar, leer algún número viejo que todavía tengo y tratar de guardárselos como legado a mis hijos para que ellos también puedan disfrutar un poco. Y por supuesto, agradecerle a Sidoli, Guerrero y todo el equipo que hizo Lúpin durante tantos años.
Now only last to remember, read some old numbers that I still have after so many moves and try to keep those numbers as a "legacy" to my kids for them to enjoy at least a little bit. And of course, be thankful to Sidoli, Guerrero and all the team that've done Lúpin for so many years.
