Si todavía no lo sabes, Budget es la companía low-cost de Avis rent-a-car. Y si tampoco lo sabes todavía, la mayoría de las cosas "low-cost" vienen siempre acompañadas de sorpresas no muy gratas.
If you don't know it yet, Budget is the low cost part of Avis. And if you don't know it yet, low cost things in most of the cases bring "hidden" surprises.
Las sorpresas que me llevé cuando recientemente alquilé mi primer (y probablemente último) auto de Budget se las dejo después del salto.

FRANQUICIA DEL SEGURO
INSURANCE DEDUCTIBLE
La franquicia básica del seguro básico que ofrece Budget is el doble que la de otros servicios de alquiler de coches. Así pues, para lo que podría ser una franquicia "normal" del orden de 500 a 700€ en Europa (algunas veces incluso menos), en Budget te clavan 1400-1500 € (o quien sabe cuánto mas). Esto significa que si chocas tu auto (o lo dañas o te lo dañan y se escapan sin hacer el parte), vas a tener que pagar esos 1400€-1500€ de la franquicia, mas gastos administrativos (50€).
The basic insurance deductible is twice the price of a "non-low-cost" renting. So, for a normal deductilbe of around 500 to 700€ in Europe (sometimes even less), in Budget you will get a 1400-1500€. This means that if you crash your car, you need to pay 1400-1500€ of the insurance fee plus the "administrative costs" (50€).
Como ya te puedes imaginar (y por eso estoy enojado), Budget no informa acerca de esta franquicia de una manera clara al momento de hacer la reserva, o por lo menos clara para el usuario común (y eso que yo soy de los que se leen la letra pequeña). Es mas, ni siquiera te informan en el email de confirmación de la reserva que te envían, que normalmente es una especie de resúmen del contrato (les dejo un scan del emain que me enviaron a mi).
Of course (and this is why I'm upset), Budget is not informing about this deductible. At least not in clear whay when doing the reservation (and I'm the kind of guys reading the small letters)... They are not even informing about this in the email that they send with the confirmation of the reservation (which should be basically an abstract of the renting contract). To prove this, I put some pictures of the email received from Budget for my example (sorry, it's in Spanish).
Claro que si estás de vacaciones con la familia no quieres estar todos los días preocupado de que si alguien le hace algo a tu auto... Así que de alguna manera te fuezan mentalmente a que te agarres de la extensión de la cobertura (o mejor dicho, de la reducción de la franquicia) que cuesta 16€/día si la pagas en la oficina (por lo menos para un coche clase "C" o compacto). Así que ese ofertón de coche, ese chollo como dirían en España, ya no existe mas y pasas a pagar lo mismo o mas que si lo hubieras alquilado con otra compañía (eso si, con seguro sin franquicia).
If you're on holidays with your family you don't want to be every day worried about your rented car, if somebody crash against it and run away... So you will be "mentally forced" to pick up the full-insurance (non-deductible), which cost 16€/day more if you pay for it in the office (price for a "C" class car, "compact"). This means that your "bargain choice" of a real "budget" car is gone away.
PAGO DEL COMBUSTIBLE POR ADELANTADO
PAYMENT OF THE FUEL IN ADVANCE
Pero el último grito de la moda en cómo extraer más dinero fácilmente de los clientes sin que algunos siquieran lo sepan es que Budget te obliga a pagar por adelantado un tanque de combustible lleno si alquilas el coche por mas de 4 días. Esto deviene en dos situaciones de ahorro extra que les explico aquí:
This is the "latest trend" in getting more and more money from the customers and some of them won't even notice it. Budget is forcing you to pay in advance the fuel of the car if you rent it for more than 4 days. This ends in two "cheating-saving situations" for the company:
a) te cobran por adelantado el combustible sin declarar cuánto combustible entra en el tanque ni cuánto cuesta cada litro (en mi caso, un Seat León 1.6TDI con un tanque de 50 litros me clavaron 95€, lo que da 1,90€ por cada litro cuando en las gasolineras costaba 1,43€)
a) they charge you the fuel with a higher rate and without doing a precise calculation of the fuel that really goes in the tank (for a Seat Leon 1.6TDI with a 50 liters diesel tank I payed 95€, which gives a 1,90€/liter of diesel, when in the gas stations the price was around 1,43€)
b) te dicen que devuelvas el tanque vacío porque ya pagaste por ese combustible, pero eso es cuanto menos ridículo, porque tendrías que traer el coche remolcado por un par de bueyes. De esta manera, en cada alquiler los señores de Budget se quedan con litros y litros de combustible que la gente paga y no puede usar. En mi caso por ejemplo, por mas que me esforcé, tuve que devolver el coche con casi 100km de autonomía (que serían unos 10 litros contando la reserva).
b) they tell you to return the car "empty", because you paid for that fuel; but that's ridiculous because you can't do that (or either you return the car by pulling from it with some donkeys). So in every rental, they are saving liters and liters of fuel that are paid but not used. In my case I tried hard but I needed to return the car with at least 100km of remaining range (10 liters approx including reserve).
Así que no solo te cobran entre unos 30-40€ mas dependiendo del coche por la diferencia del precio del combustible, sino que encima se quedan con litros gratis.
So basically they charge you 30-40€ euros more for the fuel (money that you lose) and they save liters and liters in each car return.
CONCLUSION
Suponiendo que el segundo punto es una de las basas de Budget para reducir sus costos (y yo por lo menos no lo he visto en otras compañias como Europcar o Sixt), el primero de los puntos que comento es suficientemente importante como para que piensen bien y presten mucha atención antes de elegir el próximo coche de alquiler. Budget puede servir si solo van a alquilar el auto por 2-3 días y si de alguna manera estás seguro que el auto no va a quedar expuesto a daños de 3ros malintencionado que luego serán cargados en tu cuenta.
Supposing that the second point is used by Budget to reduce their costs (I'm not sure if this practice is common in other companies), the first point is important enough for anybody to pay attention before selecting Budget as your next renta-a-car company. It can work if you rent a car for only 2-3 days and if you are sure that your car won't be exposed to possible damages that can be attributed to you.
